Lights, cameras, action: Live Oak Hall going up

Construction on Live Oak Hall, the new Film and Television building, is underway on the San Marcos Campus, with a projected completion of May 2022.
The $10 million facility, which will serve approximately 600 students and faculty of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, will feature a film sound stage, TV studio, recording mix classroom, editing lab, Foley room (sound effects), and offices. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for August 2021. The 10,291-square-foot building is expected to be operational by fall 2022.
“The building is in response to the growing film program out of Theatre and Dance, and for the first time it gives Journalism and Mass Communication their own television studio,” says Dr. John Fleming, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. For Mass Comm students, the state-of-the-art television studio will feature a news set and a multipurpose set for sports and other features. “We also have two new faculty coming on board that will be working in the TV studio.”
Project architects are the Lawrence Group. “They're based in Austin and New York and the Austin side specializes in Higher Education. The New York side specializes in media/broadcast studios, so we've been working with some top-notch media folks in New York that have worked on some major studios,” Fleming says. ✪
Music building to serve hundreds
The new music building slated for Texas State University is a much desired 21st-century addition to the campus. When completed, the $70 million project will serve almost 600 music majors and 80-plus faculty who are currently spread across five buildings.
Dr. Joey Martin, professor and interim director of the School of Music, says the facility — to be constructed alongside the Performing Arts Center — will meet the university’s academic and artistic needs. The new building will contain nearly 110,000 square feet of space for classrooms, labs, studios, music library, faculty offices, rehearsal and practice rooms, instrument maintenance room, piano technician studio, storage, and a student lounge.
“Looking ahead: Music building in our future” will appear in the fall issue of Hillviews along with an accompanying Who’s Who, which will spotlight 21 alumni from the School of Music.
